Green Apple School Supply

September 20, 2007 at 11:21 am (Cool Stuff, Product Reviews) (, , , , , )

This year I ordered some of my school supplies from Green Apple School Supplies (part of Red Apple School Supplies). I got their biodegradable highlighter pencils, 100% recycled note cards (35% PCW), and a staple-free stapler. I was going to order some Banana Paper notebooks but they were out of them at the time. I ended up finding a few at a better price at my campus bookstore. I really love the highlighters. The highlighting doesn’t bleed or rub off on even the slickest of textbook pages. The note cards are just as good as regular (you can’t tell they’re recycled by looking at them). Which is okay…but I’d prefer non-bleached note cards. The staple-free stapler is fun! It gets some interesting looks and questions when I use it in class. It’s only drawbacks are that you’re limited to a max of about 4-5 pages at a time, and that you have to make sure you aren’t stapling over any writing. The Banana Paper notebooks are nice. I like that the paper isn’t bleached. It has definite texture, which I think is pretty romantic looking. And I love the covers. I have one dolphin and one monkey. I feel happy when I see them. I give Green Apple School supply a A- for effort but a B- for selection and keeping items in stock. I give all the products an A except for the note cards, which get a B+ (until they come unbleached).

Drip…drip…drip…

August 24, 2007 at 9:30 pm (Cool Stuff, Experiences, Ideas) (, , , )

Bottled water is just no good. Don’t believe me? Check out this article by Chris Baskind.

I’ve known for a while bottled water is lame. But I’ve had some problems with water bottles in the past. I always got cheap dollar ones. And it seemed I just couldn’t keep that nasty odor from developing. I’m totally not into having to ditch a bottle because I can’t get the smell out. So I’m determined to find a better bottle that will help me keep the stink at bay. I don’t think I want a Nalgene…I’d like to avoid plastic. I’m thinking about getting a Sigg waterbottle. What do you think?

Better Moving Methods

August 24, 2007 at 9:08 pm (Cool Stuff, Ideas) (, , )

Stumbled upon this while searching for something else. Apparently a company called Earth Friendly Moving is offering reusable moving supplies (i.e. boxes made form recycled plastic) for rent. They’re only providing the service in parts of California for the time being. But I’d love to see them go national. Even if they never do we can all follow their example. If you’re moving try to pack smart. Whenever you can, pack your stuff in containers you already have. Use clothes as protective wrapping. And…use your move as a chance to pare down your stuff! If you don’t need it, sell it or donate it. That’ll mean less stuff to move! via: treehugger

I Want One!

August 24, 2007 at 3:39 pm (Cool Stuff) (, , , , )

Elly here. I try to resist the urge to consume new products that I don’t need. But this is just too awesome! A man named Nick Foley has designed the most beautiful lamp I’ve ever seen! AND it’s something an environmentalist can feel good about having around the house. It looks like a tree with pears on it. The pears are LED lamps that can actually be “picked” from the tree and used elsewhere. Just be sure to put them back to recharge. No word on when it’ll actually be possible to purchase the lamp but I can only hope it’s something I can afford (or at least feel okay asking for it as a birthday or Christmas gift). via: treehugger
